Team Matua 11 September 2015 We've got something in common - you like great wine, and we like great wine. So it's a pleasure to introduce to you the 2015 Matua Single Vineyard release, seven exceptional wines that explore the classic and the upcoming The Single Vineyard collection is the ultimate challenge for winemaking and viticulture. For Nikolai, Richard and their teams, this is their passion. Before the growing season even begins, Nik and Rich work closely so both teams can perform in the vineyard and the winery to deliver each and every exceptional Single Vineyard wine. The viticulture team develop the most pristine fruit from each vineyard. Then after Mother Nature plays her part and the winemaking team craft it into the most interesting expression of both the varietal and vintage. Richard Shenfield Chief Viticulturist Richard Shenfield Chief Viticulturist The grapes that are chosen for Single Vineyard are those that give my team and I the most pride. Over the growing season, we’ve lavished them all the care, attention and nurture in the vineyard we can - and the vineyard rewards us with the very best fruit. The day we deliver the fruit to Nikolai and his team in optimal condition is one of celebration - we know we’ve given them something truly special. Chief Viticulturist Nikolai St George Chief Winemaker Nikolai St George Chief Winemaker The Single Vineyard collection is about crafting wines that are the best expression of the vineyard and varietal, creating their unique style and flavours. They are testament to the quality of the fruit the viticulture team prepare and are a true reflection of their single vineyard. Through our winemaking, we have captured an elegance in each wine, yet they still have power and concentration – something the winemaking team and I have been trying to achieve since our very first release. First introduced in 2009, Matua Single Vineyard wines are a collection of the most interesting varietals hand-selected each vintage from Matua’s best vineyards. Available from September, the 2015 release comprises Albariño, Syrah, Merlot Malbec, and Malbec from Hawke's Bay; Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from Marlborough; and Pinot Noir from Central Otago. According to Chief Winemaker Nikolai St George, these wines were created to pique the interest of people who love great wine with a focus on purity and uniqueness. “Some leapt out at us during classification, but for most the potential was identified in the vineyard. Working closely with the viticulture team led by Richard Shenfield, we aligned canopy management and winemaking in order to produce something really special; and we’re thrilled with the results,” he said. The 2015 Single Vineyard Albariño displays enticing notes of lemon curd, white nectarine and honeydew. It is a blend of fruit from older and younger vines contributing both depth and intensity. The 2014 expression won a Trophy at the NZ International Wine Show and Pure Elite Gold at the Air NZ Wine Awards last year, and the 2015 is just as promising. Chosen unanimously by the Matua winemaking team as their top Sauvignon Blanc, the 2015 Single Vineyard wine shows pure blackcurrant bud and smoky notes derived from its Awatere vineyard. Matua has been making Sauvignon Blanc longer than anyone else in New Zealand, and considers the 2015 Single Vineyard to be one of the best. Harvested in 2014, only small quantities of the Single Vineyard Marlborough Chardonnay were produced, using three main oak coopers to help build structure and complex aromatics. Nikolai believes that Matua’s 2014 vintage has a very similar thread to that of the 2011, which was one of the most awarded Chardonnays in New Zealand at the time. The 2014 Single Vineyard Central Otago Pinot Noir has intense red fruit notes and great texture and depth similar to that of the 2012 vintage, and is Nikolai’s favourite wine of the release. With only one bunch maturing per shoot in the vineyard, it’s incredibly low yielding and comes from Bannockburn, a sub-region that consistently delivers flavours well suited to rich styles of Pinot Noir. Dark and opulent, the 2014 Single Vineyard Hawkes Bay Merlot Malbec is a great example of Merlot adding red fruit intensity to the dark, smoky, rich tannin notes of the Malbec. This is Matua’s second Merlot Malbec from the exceptional Matheson Vineyard known for its red metal soils. Also from Matheson, and following in the footsteps of the incredible 2013 vintage which won five Trophies including Champion Wine of Show at the 2015 NZ Royal Easter Show, comes the 2014 Single Vineyard Hawke’s Bay Syrah. Still as aromatic as ever, this wine features the trademarks of its predecessor, combined with a hint of extra elegance. Finally the most mature wine of the release is the 2013 Single Vineyard Malbec. Bright purple in colour which almost stains the glass, this wine is such a beast that Nikolai locked it away for a year just to tame it! Packed with vibrant cassis, black plum and blackberries, the extra time has enabled it to really fill out while still retaining a punchy finish. The 2015 Matua Single Vineyard Collection is available now from leading wine retailers in New Zealand or at the Matua Cellar Door.
