New Zealand reigned supreme at the 6 Nations Wine Challenge presentation dinner last night and Matua helped them triumph. In a contest against five other competing New World Wine producing regions, Matua walked away with the Bordeaux Blends Trophy for the Matua Single Vineyard Matheson Merlot Malbec 2013, Double Gold for the Matua Single Vineyard Matheson Merlot 2013, and Gold for the Matua Single Vineyard Matheson Syrah 2013.
“It was definitely a night for the Kiwis - we took away the most trophies and points out of an incredible line-up of international wines, and I’m so proud that Matua contributed one of New Zealand’s five Trophies,” said Matua Chief Winemaker Nikolai St George.
“It’s a fantastic result for Matua and our Hawke’s Bay wines, as we were up against five other very strong Merlot producing nations. We source all three of these wines from our Matheson Vineyard in the Red Metals Triangle of Bridge Pa in Hawke’s Bay. Merlot and Malbec are two varietals that are very much at home there and they complement themselves so beautifully as varietals.
“2013 was probably one of the best vintages we’ve seen at Matheson and it shows. Being part of our Single Vineyard Series, these wines were only made in small quantities from the very best hand-selected fruit. We’re incredibly happy with the results, particularly the Merlot Malbec, which is the first ever Merlot Malbec we have made at Matua,” he said.
Managed by the Association of Australian Boutique Winemakers Inc., the 6 Nations Wine Challenge aims to discover the New World Champions of wine. In 2015 Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America competed in the competition. It is the only wine show in the world where wines come in exclusively by invitation from the six Judges, with one judge representing each country involved.
The Trophy for Matua adds to a great year on the international wine show circuit. Other big awards of late for Matua include a Trophy for the 2014 Single Vineyard Awatere Sauvignon Blanc at London’s 2015 International Wine Challenge (IWC); and “Champion Wine of the Show” and “Champion Syrah” Trophies for the 2013 Matua Single Vineyard Matheson Syrah at the 2015 NZ Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, where Nikolai was also crowned “Wine Maker of the Year”.
